STEPS TO BECOMING A PROJECT LITERACY VOLUNTEER:
1. Please click HERE to complete the Volunteer Form and we will contact you to make an appointment for an interview.
2. You will be contacted by an Education Coordinator who will meet with you to discuss for which program you would like to volunteer.
3. You will be asked to complete an online criminal record check at no cost to you.
4. If you are volunteering as a Tutor, you will be asked what level of literacy you would like to tutor (low, medium, high).
5. The learner lesson packages are developed for you. You do not need to have any previous tutoring experience.

Adult Tutoring Program:
Volunteering for our Adult Tutoring Program requires up to a six month commitment of 1-2 hours per week of tutoring and preparation time. If your are away for a week, or month during this time, please talk to one of our Education Coordinators, as we do our best to accommodate your schedule.
One To One Reading Program:
Volunteering for our One to One Reading Program requires a commitment of once or twice a week for one hour. Volunteers need to go to the elementary school assigned to them, to meet the student(s) they are helping. The Reading Program runs from November to end of May, with breaks for the school holidays. If you would like to volunteer at a particular elementary school, please apply above.
Digital Literacy for Seniors 65+
Volunteering to support seniors who are struggling to use digital devices, or navigate online enviroments. This program lasts 6-8 weeks with one session per week.
Volunteering for Events
Project Literacy holds several fundraising events throughout the year. Please contact our Office Administrator, April King to discuss upcoming volunteer opportunities.
Volunteer qualifications, values, skills:
- Must be 19 years of age or older
- Dependability and promptness
- Fair and ethical behaviour. Tutors must treat everyone fairly, regardless of gender, ethnic background, colour, sexual orientation, religion, political belief, or economic status
- Enthusiasm, patience, adaptability, open-mindedness, and a sense of humour
- Willingness to tutor at the pace of your learner
- Confidentiality (all information about your learner needs to be kept confidential)

Location:
Our volunteer tutors usually meet their learner at Project Literacy’s Learning Centre, located at 1635 Bertram Street. However, it is also possible to meet in public places such as the library, cafés or community spaces or online. Homes are not an option.
Our community will be richer because of your generous sharing of your time and talent.
