MEDIA RELEASE: PROJECT LITERACY TURNS THE PAGE ON OUTDATED RESOURCE MATERIALS WITH INTERIOR SAVINGS SUPPORT

Project Literacy Kelowna Society is excited about the opportunity to improve the resources available to its more than 400 learners and 125 volunteer tutors this year. Thanks to a grant from Interior Savings, Project Literacy can finally update some of the resource materials used in its core tutoring program. The program matches community volunteer tutors with adult learners who want to improve some area of literacy.

“Project Literacy Kelowna supports its volunteer tutors by providing the tools and resources necessary to work with their learner. These resources can include strategies to overcoming learning barriers, learning and tutoring plans and resource materials like books, participant workbooks and textbooks.” says Project Literacy Kelowna’s Executive Director Christine McWillis, “As an organization, we are constantly working to expand and update the resources available to support our tutors and learners.”

The Interior Savings Community Investment Fund was an excellent fit for this initiative. “One objective of the Fund is to help empower parents to give their children a good start in life,” says Kathy Conway, CEO of Interior Savings. “Improving literacy has a direct impact on the family unit. In the process of improving their own literary skills, adult learners acquire a strong appreciation of literacy that they pass on to their children and grandchildren.”

Funding in the amount of $5,000 from Interior Savings will soon be spent on resource materials including workbooks, textbooks and readers that learners utilize while working with their tutor. The books are used and reused by tutors and learners as they progress toward their learning objective. This means that the support of Interior Savings to this project will make a lasting impact on the organization and the community.
